Like building a house, you need to thoroughly prepare
yourself and the landscape for your new home. So performing thorough market
research for a niche is akin to pouring a solid foundation for any business.
You may think that an ideal topic will make an awesome
niche, but without doing a little homework at the outset, you may find yourself
headed down a dead end street.
What if your idea seems very popular, but you discover that there is no buying market for it? Would you still be willing to do all the work, knowing that you would likely never earn an income from it?
Of course not ... and that's why you need to invest a little
time doing market research to clearly identify the potential winners from the
sure losers.
As much as we would all like to find that hidden gem, we
must also realize that most of them have long since been identified. What we
are looking for, are a few key components that will help us build a successful
business, online or off.
Interesting is Key
It is always easier to win within a niche that you are
passionate about. This will show up in your articles and the frequency of your
writing.
You will also find that you have more energy to devote to
your niche, as your enthusiasm for it will carry you through times, when
another less interesting niche could sap you.
Profitability Pays the Bills
You want to look for presence of competition, but not over
saturation. You could do a search for various keyword phrases related to your
niche in Google and see if there are any advertisers.
If there are no advertisers, it could mean that there is no
buying market ... or that you have indeed found a hidden gem.
Ideally, your niche should have lots of emotionally driven
potential customers. Look for forums related to your niche and read through
them. You will quickly get a feel for emotion levels and find new ideas to add
to your niche.
Enduring for a Lifetime
Look for an evergreen type of niche. That is one that has
consistent level of interest throughout the year.
This will allow you time to build relationships while
building and growing your list. And with a strong list, you can continue to
grow the profits in your business.
While you are at it, take a look at the "Evergrren postings in the Ranty Niches blog for additional ideas.
